Eight is the largest split in the generator, and the tidiest size for a tournament: a knockout with eight teams needs no byes. Quarterfinals, semifinals and a final make seven games, and every team plays at least once. The page opens on Make 8 teams. Paste the participant list and press the button; 40 people give eight teams of five.
Because the names are shuffled before they are dealt, the team numbers are random as well. Pair them straight into quarterfinals: 1 against 8, 2 against 7, 3 against 6, 4 against 5. The winners of the first two games meet in one semifinal, the winners of the other two in the second semifinal. Nobody can claim the bracket was arranged.
| Format | Games | Games per team |
|---|---|---|
| Single knockout | 7 | 1 to 3 |
| Two pools of 4, then semifinals and final | 15 | 3 to 5 |
| Round robin, everyone plays everyone | 28 | 7 |
A knockout is quick but half the teams go home after one game. Pools of four (Teams 1 to 4 and Teams 5 to 8) give everyone three games before the semifinals. The full round robin below is for leagues that run over several weeks.
For smaller events, 4 teams gives a shorter tournament, and 6 teams suits six tables.
Every team meets every other team once: 28 matches over 7 rounds.

Seven: four quarterfinals, two semifinals and the final. A knockout always needs one game fewer than the number of teams.
Eight is the maximum number of teams. For more groups, choose a group size instead, such as teams of 4, and the generator makes as many teams as needed.
Use the team numbers from the draw: 1 against 8, 2 against 7, 3 against 6, 4 against 5. They come from the shuffle, so the bracket is random.
