Christmas truth or dare for the holidays

The presents are open, dinner is settling and the cousins are getting restless: time for a round of Christmas truth or dare. Every card on this page is about the holidays. The truths ask about cookies, stockings, ugly sweaters, carols and the gift you begged for and never got. The dares turn the living room into a stage: reindeer takeoff practice, a snow globe being shaken, a country version of "Silent Night." It is all family friendly, from age 6 to 96, and nothing needs props.

How to play over the holidays

  • One screen for everyone. Set the phone in the middle of the table or put the page on the TV. On your turn, tap Truth, Dare or Random.
  • Candy cane passes. Everyone gets one candy cane or chocolate as a pass. Hand it over to skip a card; once it is gone, no more skipping.
  • Kids against grown-ups. The kids form one team and the adults another, with grandparents as judges. Winners get first pick of dessert.
  • Stocking order. Go around in the order the stockings hang, or let the youngest player choose who goes next.

Tips for a merry game

The holidays bring together people who see each other once or twice a year, so these truths stay light: traditions, food, gifts and memories, never politics, money or anyone's love life. The dares never make anyone eat something, climb on furniture or go near candles.

  • Santa's secret is safe. No card questions whether he is real, so you can play in front of kids who still leave cookies out.
  • With grandparents, pick Truth often: their childhood Christmases are full of stories the grandkids have never heard.
  • Doing a gift exchange? Draw names with the Secret Santa generator and play while the presents are opened.
  • Over a video call, one person shares their screen or reads the card, and every dare can be done in a chair in front of the camera.
