A name picker on your class website

Cold calling, choosing who hands out the books, setting the order of presentations: a draw the whole class can see settles these small questions without arguments. This widget puts the name picker on your class website, your teaching blog or your school's Google Site, right next to the day's work and links. Tap Copy code above and paste it into the page.

How it works with a class

  • Your class list. Tap “12 Names”, clear the examples and paste your students' first names, one per line (copying a column from a spreadsheet works). The list is kept in the browser of the computer where you typed it and is never sent anywhere.
  • Everyone gets a turn. Remove picked names (shown as “No repeats” on a small widget) is on: a picked student leaves the draw. Once everyone has gone, the next round starts again with the whole class.
  • Several names at once. Tap “one name” in the sentence at the top to switch to 2, 3, 5 or 10 names: instant pairs, or a whole running order.
  • Who has gone already. After the first pick, a line counts how many students have been picked; tap it to see the latest names and Reset if needed.

Where to paste it

In Google Sites: Insert, Embed, Embed code tab. In a WordPress blog: a Custom HTML block. If your learning platform accepts HTML code or an iframe block, the code goes in the same way. If it does not, a plain link to the random student picker does the job: it opens in the browser, with a full screen button for the projector.

How it works

  1. Pick a tool

Tap the tool name in the sentence at the top: wheel, dice, coin flip, name picker, teams… The preview shows the widget right away.

  2. Choose a size and a color

Pick Small, Medium or Large. The widget takes the color of the page: change it with the palette at the bottom right.

  3. Copy the code

Tap Copy code and paste it into your site, or tap Link for Notion and paste the link into an Embed block.

Any suggestions for improvement?

We build tools that are as simple and intuitive as possible, with a few bonuses here and there. Tell us what would make this one better.

Why a widget rather than a link

The widget keeps everything in one place: the lesson plan, the reading and the name picker. On the interactive whiteboard you open the class page and you are ready, with no extra tab to hunt for. Choose Large for a projected screen: the list sits beside the reel and names are readable from the back row.

Student data

Names typed into the widget stay in the browser where they were typed. They are not sent anywhere or stored on a server. A student who opens the class page at home sees the sample list, not yours. To be safe, use first names only.

To split the class into groups instead, the team generator has a widget that pastes in the same way.

Questions

Will my students see the class list at home?

No. The list is kept in the browser of the device where you typed it. At home, students see the sample list and can type their own.

Can the same student be picked twice in a row?

Not while Remove picked names is on: each student is picked once per round. Turn it off if a name should be able to come back.

Does it work on an interactive whiteboard?

Yes. Open the class page on the computer connected to the board; in Large, the reel and the list are readable from a distance. The Sound button silences the reel.

My platform blocks HTML code. What can I do?

Some school platforms block iframes. In that case, post the link to the name picker instead: it opens in any browser with the same options.

Are the widgets free?

Yes. Every widget is free, with no account and no visit limit. Copy the code and you are done.
