Random partners in one tap

Pair work goes better when partners change. Left to choose, people pick the same partner every time, and someone always waits to be picked. This page opens the generator on Make teams of 2. Paste your list, press the button, and everyone gets a partner. With an odd number, one pair becomes a group of three, so nobody ends up working alone.

Where random pairs help

  • Think, pair, share. Students think alone, discuss with a random partner, then share with the class.
  • Peer review. Swap essays or code with a partner you would not have chosen, for a fresh pair of eyes.
  • Language practice. Conversation partners rotated every lesson hear more accents and vocabulary.
  • Coffee pairings at work. Each week, two colleagues from different teams grab a coffee. Copy the pairs into the team chat.
  • Doubles. Tennis, badminton, pickleball or beach volleyball partners for a social tournament.
  • Buddy systems. On a field trip or at a swimming lesson, each child keeps track of one buddy.

New partners every time

Every press of Make teams is a new shuffle, so the same two people can be drawn together again by chance. If you rotate pairs over several weeks and want to avoid repeats, glance at the result and press again until no pair repeats. The list itself is saved in this browser, so next week’s pairing starts from the same names.

Even and odd numbers

The table below shows what happens for 16 to 32 people. With 24 people you get twelve pairs; with 25, eleven pairs and one trio. If you would rather have the extra person float between pairs, put that person aside and pair the rest.

For pairs that then compete in a bracket, send them on to 8 teams or 4 teams. For a single name at a time, the name picker is quicker.

Splitting into teams of 2, from 16 to 32 people

If the count doesn’t divide evenly, some teams get one person more or one less. Nobody is ever left alone.

Questions

What happens with an odd number of people?

One group gets three people and all the others are pairs. Nobody is ever left without a partner.

Can I avoid pairing the same people as last time?

There is no memory of past pairs. Press Make teams again until you are happy with the mix; with a class of 20 or more, a repeat is rare.

How do I share the pairs with the class?

Press Copy and paste the list wherever you need it, or switch to full screen and show it on the projector.

Is the random team generator free?

Yes. It is free, funded by advertising, with no account and no app to install.
