Here the picker only draws from the short girl names in our list: 44 names of three to six letters, 37 of them with four letters or fewer. Press More names for another set, or choose Top 10 to see the most given first.
Short names are well represented at the top of the 2025 Social Security Administration list: Emma is 3rd, Mia 6th and Ava 11th. Nora, Isla, Ella, Zoe, Grace, Ivy, Mila and Nova are also in the top 50. Twenty-one of the 44 names are in the top 100.
The list splits into two families. The vowel-ending names, like Mia, Ava, Ella, Mila, Nova, Isla, Maya and Hana, are soft and international. The one-syllable names, like Grace, Claire, Jade, Quinn, Maeve, Rose, Jane, June, Wren, Brooke, Pearl and Liv, are crisp and leave room for a longer middle name.
Short names rarely get shortened further, which many parents like: the name your daughter is called at school is the name on her birth certificate. If you want a short name that is still uncommon, look at the 23 outside the top 100, from Ada, Clio and Fern to Posy, Tess and Wren.
