One good gift each instead of a pile for everyone

In a big family, buying for every cousin, aunt and in-law gets expensive fast. Drawing names means each adult buys one thoughtful present, and everyone still has something to open. This page opens with the budget set to $30, a common middle ground for family exchanges; tap another amount if your family prefers less or more.

Drawing names at a family gathering

Plenty of families draw at Thanksgiving dinner, when everyone is around the same table a month before Christmas. Choose Together, right now, add every name, then use the Any couples? screen: tap a husband and wife, or two partners, so they never draw each other. It also works for siblings who live together, or for last year’s pairs if you want a change. Then choose Pass the phone: each person taps their name and holds the button to see their match.

Kids and grown-ups

  • Two separate draws. Many families let children draw among themselves and adults among themselves. Each page of this site remembers its own draw, so run the adults here and the kids on the main Secret Santa generator.
  • Help the little ones. A child who cannot read yet can hold the button next to a parent, who whispers the name.
  • A lower kids’ budget. Ten dollars buys a book, a craft kit or a card game, plenty for a young cousin.

Family gift ideas around $30

A board game the whole table can play, a cozy throw, a cookbook with a family recipe tucked inside, a framed photo from a reunion, or tickets for a shared outing. When you draw an in-law you barely know, ask a sibling for ideas rather than guessing.

For the order of opening on Christmas morning, shuffle the list of names. Friends planning their own exchange can start from Secret Santa with friends.

How it works

  1. Add everyone’s name

Tap Together, right now, then type each name and press Add, or paste a whole list. You need at least 3 people, and nobody can draw themselves.

  2. Answer the short questions

One question per screen, depending on the page: gift ideas, couples who shouldn’t draw each other, then the budget per gift, often already chosen here. Press OK to go on.

  3. Reveal the matches

Choose Pass the phone: each person taps their name, then holds the button to see their match. Or choose Private links and send one link per person in your group chat.

Questions

How do I stop spouses from drawing each other?

On the Any couples? screen, tap one partner, then the other. The pair works both ways. Add as many pairs as you need; the tool warns you only if the rules leave no possible draw.

Do babies and toddlers take part?

Usually not as givers. Some families leave the youngest out of the draw and let parents buy for them, others add them with a parent shopping on their behalf. Both work; decide before you draw.

Some relatives can’t come to the gathering. Can they still join?

Yes. Choose Private links instead of Pass the phone and send each absent relative their own link by text. The gifts can be mailed or opened together on a video call.

What budget is right for a family Secret Santa?

Whatever everyone can afford without stress. Agree on it before the draw, because the amount is shown with every match and the least comfortable person should feel at ease.

Can I do a Secret Santa without emails?

Yes. Choose Together, right now, add the names and answer three quick questions. Then pass the phone around, or send one private link per person in your group chat.
