A friends’ Secret Santa that is fun to plan

A friend group swap is the relaxed version of the gift exchange: lower stakes, inside jokes allowed. This page starts with a $20 budget, enough for something thoughtful without straining anyone’s December. Add everyone in the group chat, pair any couples so they don’t draw each other, then reveal by passing the phone at the next get-together or by sending Private links right away.

Pick a theme

A theme makes shopping easier and the opening more entertaining. Some that work well with friends:

  • Book swap. A book you loved, with a note on why.
  • Something handmade. Cookies, a playlist, a knitted scarf, a framed doodle.
  • Local only. Everything must come from a shop or maker in your town.
  • Under $10 and silly. The funniest gift wins bragging rights for a year.
  • A to Z. The gift must start with the first letter of the receiver’s name. A random letter can replace the name if you want more chaos.

Reveal games for the party

Before opening, each person reads a clue about who their Secret Santa might be, and the group guesses. Or open gifts one at a time, and the receiver gets three guesses before the giver owns up. If you prefer the stealing game, a White Elephant swap works differently: gifts are anonymous and can be taken by the next player, so there is no name draw at all.

Secret Santa or White Elephant?

Secret Santa gives every person a gift chosen for them. White Elephant (also called Yankee swap) is a game with random presents and stealing. Friends who know each other well usually enjoy Secret Santa more; a big mixed party may prefer the swap.

How it works

  1. Add everyone’s name

Tap Together, right now, then type each name and press Add, or paste a whole list. You need at least 3 people, and nobody can draw themselves.

  2. Answer the short questions

One question per screen, depending on the page: gift ideas, couples who shouldn’t draw each other, then the budget per gift, often already chosen here. Press OK to go on.

  3. Reveal the matches

Choose Pass the phone: each person taps their name, then holds the button to see their match. Or choose Private links and send one link per person in your group chat.

Questions

How many friends do you need for Secret Santa?

At least three. With three people the draw is a simple circle; from five or six people on, it is much harder to guess who has whom.

Two of our friends are a couple. Can they be kept apart?

Yes. On the Any couples? screen, tap both names. If several couples are in the group, see the page on Secret Santa with couples for tips on when a draw becomes impossible.

Someone joined the group chat late. Do we redraw?

Yes, press New draw after adding the name. Everyone gets a new match, so share the new links and tell the group to ignore the first ones.

Can we keep the theme a surprise?

The theme is best agreed in the group chat before the draw, so everyone shops with the same rule. The match itself stays secret until the party.

Can I do a Secret Santa without emails?

Yes. Choose Together, right now, add the names and answer three quick questions. Then pass the phone around, or send one private link per person in your group chat.
