Spin for a random African country

Africa has 54 countries recognized by the United Nations, more than any other continent, and they are all on this wheel, from Algeria to Zimbabwe. Each spin gives every country a 1 in 54 chance, close to 1.9%. The slices are small, so the full name appears in large type when the wheel stops.

Ways to use the Africa wheel

  • Research assignments. One spin per student, then a one page fact sheet: capital, languages, population, a landmark and a traditional dish.
  • Locate it. Spin and find the country on a map of Africa. Small coastal countries such as Togo, Benin or Gambia are the hardest.
  • Capitals duel. Two players, one spin each turn: first to name the capital wins the point. Abuja, Dodoma and Yamoussoukro catch many people out.
  • Islands round. Keep only the island nations (Cabo Verde, Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, São Tomé and Príncipe, Seychelles) for a quick bonus round.
  • Music and stories. Spin, then listen to one song from the country or read a folk tale from it. A calm way to end a geography lesson.

Countries by region

The UN splits Africa into five regions. Eastern Africa has the most countries on the wheel, Southern Africa the fewest.

Usually the small ones: Eswatini, Lesotho, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea and the island states. Spin a few times with only those to practice.

Can the wheel pick a different country for each student?

Yes. After each spin, press Remove in the pop-up. The country leaves the wheel, so the next student always gets a new one.
