Spin for a random English county

England has 48 ceremonial counties, the areas used for the Lord-Lieutenants under the Lieutenancies Act 1997, and this wheel holds all of them. Each county has a 1 in 48 chance per spin, about 2.1%. They are the counties most maps and quizzes use today, which is why we chose them over the historic counties or the council areas.

Ideas for the county wheel

  • Staycation picker. Spin for your next weekend away in England, then find one walk, one pub and one market town there.
  • County quiz. Spin and name the county town, a famous dish or cheese, or a neighbouring county. Cornish pasties and Cheddar from Somerset are the easy ones.
  • Map challenge. Point to the county on a blank map of England before the next player spins. Rutland, the smallest, is the classic trap.
  • Club or team names. Spin a county to name a quiz team, a classroom group or a fantasy league.

A few things to know about the list

Yorkshire is split into four ceremonial counties: North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire and the East Riding of Yorkshire. Greater London and the City of London are separate, and Bristol is a county on its own. If you want the whole of the UK, add the Welsh and Northern Irish counties from the lists below.

How it works

  1. Add your entries

Type names or options in the box, one per line. Your list stays saved in this browser.

  2. Spin the wheel

Tap the wheel or the Spin button in its center, press Space, or flick the wheel with your finger or mouse.

  3. See the winner

The wheel slows down and stops on one slice. Spin again, or remove the winner to draw the next one.

Wales and Northern Ireland

Wales has 8 preserved counties, used for the same ceremonial purposes: Clwyd, Dyfed, Gwent, Gwynedd, Mid Glamorgan, Powys, South Glamorgan, West Glamorgan.

Northern Ireland has 6 traditional counties: Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Londonderry, Tyrone.

Scotland uses 32 council areas and its own lieutenancy areas, so there is no single county list to copy. With England, Wales and Northern Ireland together the wheel has 62 slices, each with a 1.6% chance.

Questions

Why 48 counties and not 39 or 86?

Counties of England can mean the historic counties, the ceremonial counties or today's local councils. We use the 48 ceremonial counties because they cover all of England with no overlap and match most modern maps.

Is Yorkshire on the wheel?

Yes, in four parts: North, South and West Yorkshire and the East Riding of Yorkshire. Replace them with one Yorkshire line if you prefer the historic county.

Can I add Scotland and Wales?

Yes. Paste the Welsh counties from this page, or type the Scottish council areas you want, one per line. Each new line becomes a slice.

Is this wheel of names free?

Yes. It is free to use, funded by advertising, with no account and no app to install.
