Spin a capital, name the country

This wheel has the 45 capital cities of Europe, one for each country on our European countries wheel. It works as a reverse quiz: the wheel shows a capital, you name the country. Each city has a 1 in 45 chance, about 2.2%, and the answers are in the table below.

How to play

  • Solo practice. Spin, answer, check. When you get one right, press Remove so the wheel only keeps the capitals you don't know yet.
  • Team quiz. Two teams take turns. A right answer scores one point; a right answer plus the country's flag colors scores two.
  • Ten in a row. Try to get ten correct answers in a row. A wrong answer sends your counter back to zero.
  • City break picker. Forget the quiz and let the wheel choose your next weekend away.

The trickiest capitals

Some capitals are easy to confuse: Bratislava and Ljubljana, Riga and Tallinn, Skopje and Podgorica. Others share their country's name: Luxembourg, Monaco, San Marino and Vatican City. Bern is officially the Swiss "federal city", and Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands even though the government sits in The Hague.

How it works

  1. Add your entries

Type names or options in the box, one per line. Your list stays saved in this browser.

  2. Spin the wheel

Tap the wheel or the Spin button in its center, press Space, or flick the wheel with your finger or mouse.

  3. See the winner

The wheel slows down and stops on one slice. Spin again, or remove the winner to draw the next one.

Questions

Is The Hague the capital of the Netherlands?

No. Amsterdam is the capital under the Dutch constitution. The Hague is the seat of the government and the parliament, which is why it often shows up in quizzes.

Is Bern really the capital of Switzerland?

Switzerland names no capital in its constitution. Bern is the federal city, where the government and parliament sit, and it is the answer every quiz expects. Zurich and Geneva are bigger, which is why they are common wrong answers.

Can I use the wheel to learn the capitals by heart?

Yes. Spin, answer, and press Remove each time you get one right. When the wheel is empty, reload the page to start again with all of them.

Is this wheel of names free?

Yes. It is free to use, funded by advertising, with no account and no app to install.
