Spin the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac

Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig: the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac sit on this wheel in their traditional order. Each comes back every twelve years, and each has a 1 in 12 chance on the wheel. 2026 is a Year of the Horse.

Ideas for Lunar New Year and beyond

  • Classroom activity. Spin an animal, find the years in the table, and ask who in the class or the family was born in one of them.
  • The Great Race. Tell the legend of the race that set the order of the animals, then spin and ask the children where that animal finished and why.
  • Crafts. Each child spins an animal to draw, make into a paper lantern decoration or turn into a mask.
  • Guess the year. Spin and name a year of that animal without looking at the table. Closest answer wins.

Years of each animal, 1960 to 2031

The Chinese year starts at the Lunar New Year, between January 21 and February 20. Someone born in January or early February may belong to the previous year's animal.
