Spin for a random color

This spinner holds 12 basic color names that children learn early: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink, brown, black, white, gray and turquoise. Each has a 1 in 12 chance, about 8.3%. It is not the artist's color wheel, the circle that shows how colors mix; it is a game spinner. For a random shade with its hex code, use the random color generator.

Games with the color spinner

  • Color hunt. Spin, then everyone has one minute to find three things of that color in the room or the garden.
  • Learning colors. For toddlers, cut the list to five colors and say the name together after each spin.
  • Limited palette. Artists spin two or three colors and draw only with those. Pair it with the drawing ideas wheel.
  • Outfit of the day. Spin in the morning and wear something of that color. Good for school spirit weeks.
  • Floor game. Put colored paper on the floor; spin a color and a body part, and players put a hand or foot on that color.
