Roll the dice
Roll with .
When a role-playing game asks for 1d8, the die is ready here: one eight-sided die, nothing to set up. A real d8 is an octahedron, two square pyramids joined at the base, with eight triangular faces. Tap it, press Roll or hit the Space bar: each number from 1 to 8 has a 12.5% chance, and the average roll is 4.5.
Under the fifth edition rules, a critical hit doubles the damage dice, not the bonus: a longsword crit rolls 2d8 and then adds the modifier once. Switch to 2 dice before you roll so you see both results and their total. If you play with a house rule such as “maximum on the first die, roll the second”, tap the die you want to keep after a roll and it stays put while the other re-rolls.
The d8 is also a fair choice among eight options, whether players, teams or tasks. The 1 to 8 number page gives the same odds as a plain number.
8 faces, each with the same chance. Average roll: 4.5.
