Roll a d8 online

When a role-playing game asks for 1d8, the die is ready here: one eight-sided die, nothing to set up. A real d8 is an octahedron, two square pyramids joined at the base, with eight triangular faces. Tap it, press Roll or hit the Space bar: each number from 1 to 8 has a 12.5% chance, and the average roll is 4.5.

Where the d8 shows up

  • Weapon damage. In fifth edition, the longsword, the rapier, the battleaxe and the warhammer deal 1d8 damage, and a hit with a crossbow can too.
  • Hit dice. Bards, clerics, druids, monks, rogues and warlocks roll a d8 for hit points as they level up.
  • Healing and spells. Many healing spells roll d8s, often several at once. Tap “one die” to roll up to 10 and let the total add itself up.
  • Eight directions. North, north-east, east and so on round the compass: roll to see which way a lost character, a storm or a wandering creature goes.

Critical hits and doubled dice

Under the fifth edition rules, a critical hit doubles the damage dice, not the bonus: a longsword crit rolls 2d8 and then adds the modifier once. Switch to 2 dice before you roll so you see both results and their total. If you play with a house rule such as “maximum on the first die, roll the second”, tap the die you want to keep after a roll and it stays put while the other re-rolls.

The d8 is also a fair choice among eight options, whether players, teams or tasks. The 1 to 8 number page gives the same odds as a plain number.

How it works

  1. Your dice are ready

The dice for this page are already on the table, and the sentence under them says how many and how many sides. No setup needed.

  2. Roll them

Tap the dice, press Roll or hit the Space bar. They tumble, land, and the result appears at the top.

  3. Keep, re-roll or switch

Tap a die to keep it while the others re-roll; Release all frees them. To roll something else, tap the number of dice or sides in the sentence.
