Spin the genre, then pick the movie

Scrolling through streaming menus for forty minutes is nobody's idea of a fun evening. Spin this wheel first: it narrows the choice to one genre out of 20, from action and comedy to westerns, musicals and documentaries. Each genre has a 1 in 20 chance, 5%.

Movie night, sorted

  • Spin, suggest, vote. The wheel chooses the genre, each person suggests one title in it, and you vote. Five minutes, start to finish.
  • Genre year. For a film club, spin once a week and press Remove. After 20 weeks you have watched one film from every genre, including the ones you would never have picked.
  • Genre swap. Spin, then retell a movie everyone knows in that genre. A heist story as a musical, a family film as a horror movie.
  • Writing prompt. Students spin a genre and write the opening scene of a film in it, with the rules of the genre: a mystery needs a clue, a western needs a showdown.

How long until you see every genre?

With repeats allowed, some genres come up again before others appear at all. This is the classic collector's problem, and the numbers are bigger than most people guess:

Questions

Can I add subgenres like heist or zombie movies?

Yes. Type them as new lines, or replace the list with the subgenres your group actually argues about. Each line is one slice.

Can the wheel choose the movie itself?

Yes, if you type titles instead of genres. Many families keep a list of ten movies on their watch list and spin it on Friday night.

What counts as a family movie here?

A film made for all ages, animated or not. If it overlaps with animation on your wheel, delete one of the two so the choice feels different.

Do all genres have the same chance?

Yes. Each of the 20 slices is the same size, and the result is drawn at random before the wheel starts turning.

Is this wheel of names free?
