Four six-sided dice are ready. Tap them, press Roll or hit the Space bar, and you see all four faces with their total, from 4 to 24. The average total is 14.

4d6 drop lowest: rolling ability scores

The most famous use of four dice comes from fantasy role-playing: to create a character, roll four dice, ignore the lowest one and add the other three. Do it six times, once for each ability. The fifth edition rules give this as the standard way to roll scores, next to a fixed array (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8) and a point-buy option.

Dropping a die pushes the results up. Plain 3d6 averages 10.5; 4d6 drop lowest averages a little over 12. Scores of 3 become very rare, and 18s show up more often: 21 times in 1,296, about 1.6% of rolls. The second table below gives the exact chance of every score.

How to roll a full set here

  • Roll once, mentally drop the lowest die and write down the sum of the other three.
  • Repeat six times. The history keeps your recent totals, but write each score down, since the history shows the total of all four dice.
  • Table rule check: some groups allow a reroll if no score reaches 13, or if the total of all modifiers is too low. Agree before rolling.

Other 4d6 rolls

A straight 4d6 roll, with no die dropped, comes up for damage: guiding bolt deals 4d6 radiant damage, and sneak attack reaches 4d6 at seventh level. For those, just read the total. To make 3d6 or 5d6 instead, tap “4 dice” in the sentence.
