Don't know what to draw? Spin

A blank page is hard; a prompt is easy. This wheel holds 24 drawing ideas, some simple (a rainy street, a treehouse) and some silly (a cat astronaut, a monster's lunchbox). Spin, set a timer and draw. Each prompt has a 1 in 24 chance.

Ways to use the drawing wheel

  • Daily sketch. One spin a day, ten minutes, no erasing. After a month you can flip through your sketchbook and see the change.
  • Art class warm-up. Spin at the start of class and give everyone five minutes. Then compare how different the drawings of one prompt can be.
  • Limited palette. Spin a prompt, then spin the color wheel twice and draw it using only those two colors.
  • Pass the paper. In a group, each person draws for one minute then passes the sheet on. The prompt stays the same; the style keeps changing.
  • Mash-up. Spin twice and combine both ideas in one picture: a dragon in a busy market, a treehouse on the moon.

  2. Spin the wheel

Tap the wheel or the Spin button in its center, press Space, or flick the wheel with your finger or mouse.

Questions

Is the drawing wheel good for kids?

Yes. All the prompts are friendly for children, and the silly ones are often the best for getting a reluctant artist started.

Can I add harder prompts for practice?

Yes. Type art exercises as new lines: hands, a face in profile, a chair in perspective, folds of fabric. Spin them when you want to train a skill.

Can I run a drawing contest with it?

Yes. Spin one prompt for everybody, set the same time limit and let the group vote. Hide the artists' names until after the vote to keep it fair.

How long should a drawing take?

There is no rule. Five minutes for a warm-up, twenty for a sketchbook page, an afternoon if the prompt inspires you.

Is this wheel of names free?

Yes. It is free to use, funded by advertising, with no account and no app to install.
