Random number between 1 and 500

When a list gets long, a number is the easiest way to draw from it fairly. This page is set from 1 to 500: press Generate and each number has a chance of one in five hundred, or 0.2%. Up to 20 numbers can be drawn in one press.

Giveaways and large raffles

For an online giveaway, export the list of entries, remove duplicates and anyone who does not meet the rules, then number what remains. If 437 valid entries are left, tap 500 in the sentence and type 437. Draw on a screen recording or a live stream with the full screen button on, so participants can see the result is not picked by hand. Turn on No repeats if there are several prizes.

Random samples from a long list

Checking every line of a 500-row spreadsheet is slow; checking 20 random rows is quick and still tells you a lot. Ask for 20 numbers with No repeats on and inspect those rows. The same idea works for invoices to audit, products to test, survey answers to read in full, or photos to review. Because every row has the same chance, the sample is not tilted toward the top of the list, which is where people tend to look first.

Other ideas

  • Pick a random page of a long book or a random entry in a dictionary.
  • Give each attendee of a big event a badge number and draw spot prizes during the day.
  • Choose a random question from a large exam bank.
